UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network
According to the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Sweden seems to be a country with a fairly high level of happiness worldwide, although the margin of error depends on age.
As I felt during my trip, most of the people I met were smiling at me.
This time, I wrote an article about my trip to Stockholm for 7 days and 5 nights. I hope you will enjoy it to the end.
Day1
From England to Stockholm Airport .
I booked a flight in the morning at a time when I could take the bus, and a colleague gave me a lift to the train station where I could easily access the airport.
The train was on time, and I thought I would be able to catch my flight in plenty of time.
However, I received an e-mail from the airline. The text was “Your flight has been canceled.”I was very upset.
Can’t I go to Stockholm? I was relieved to receive a series of e-mails from the company, and a flight was arranged for 4 hours later than scheduled.
Before going to Stockholm, I had a bite to eat at the airport.

I ordered a salad. My friend and I shared a bowl of fries with a lot of cheese on it.
While we were talking, it was time for our flight.
At the luggage check, the manekia, which I had forgotten to move from the pouch, was caught, but I made it to Stockholm without incident.
It was colder than in England, but not freezing cold. Probably about the same as midwinter in Japan.

The buses change to reach the hotel.

By the way, the bus stop was easy to find as the route was marked at the airport.
I followed the route and arrived at the bus stop.
We stayed in a spacious room with a kitchen.
I had originally planned to have dinner at night, but my flight was delayed, so I had a yogurt and salad wrap from a convenience store at Stockholm Central Station and went to bed soon after.
Come to think of it, the yogurt I bought was bad … (This is my personal opinion.)
I did my best to snack on it, but it tasted very strange with oats in it.
Day 2
I was a bit hungry when I woke up, so I went looking for breakfast at the supermarket right next to the hotel. I bought yoghurt, cinnamon rolls, chocolate and a smoothie.

The yoghurt tasted worse than the one I bought on day 1 .
Beware when buying yoghurt in Sweden … (Of course, this is my personal opinion.)
After getting ready, the first destination was Stockholms stadshus.

Many of you might recognise this building.
The town was the setting for “KIKI’s Delivery Service” which is one of the famous Japanese anime and was very pretty.
Next, we went to IKEA, a Swedish furniture company. On the way there, we found a souvenir shop and decided to stop by.

What do you think of souvenirs in Sweden?
One day, a teacher at the cram school I went to when I was in high school bought me a souvenir from Sweden. A silver keyring in the shape of a horse. It seems to be a traditional Swedish craft.
At the time, I had never imagined that they were coloured, but when I actually went into a souvenir shop, I was surprised to see them painted in bright red, blue and yellow.
Now, at this age, I searched again and found that it is also called the “Dala Horse”!
I am glad that I had the chance to come to Sweden and see for myself.
I still respect and am very grateful to the teachers who influenced me.
We took a little detour and ordered a snack at IKEA, just as we were getting hungry.

I ordered a salad with salmon . It was so good.

There were many locals and everyone was ordering meatballs.
The products in the IKEA shop were almost the same as those in Japan, but there were frozen meatballs on the shelves.
When you’ve had your fill, head to the shopping mall for some window shopping .
Sweden was very clean and the people were friendly.

Toilets in Sweden are basically free, but toilets in shopping malls cost a little. As this is basically a cashless country, the only option was to pay by card.
When we went into the pub we couldn’t flush the toilet paper, it said to throw it in the rubbish bin.
I was also a little surprised to find that the toilets in the shops were pitch black the moment you entered, because there is a light switch inside the toilet.
Normally, I think the lights are always on in the toilets, but in Stockholm, I think it’s normal to turn off the lights when you’ve finished using them.
Take a break at the café
One of the things I wanted to eat in Sweden was ‘semla’.

Semla is a Swedish winter sweet.
I don’t like whipped cream, but the almonds in it and the bread dough make it very tasty without being too sweet.
We stopped at a couple of cafés and often saw open-sandwiches like the one pictured above. They were very tasty!

I had time, so I ordered a refill.
This pastry is also a traditional Swedish pastry called Damsugare.
In Sweden, there is a culture of ‘enjoying coffee with sweets’, or ‘FIKA’, and it seems that people do FIKA with their families, colleagues and partners.
It is lovery, isn’t it?
Swedish cafés and restaurants were lovely with small flowers. The restaurants were clean, the people were calm and comfortable, and I found myself staying there for about four hours.
Ever since I heard an orchestra play at a junior high school music appreciation concert, I have loved enjoying music in a large hall.
When I was a student I was not financially able to see them …
As a working person, the time I spent at the opera, orchestra, musicals and cinemas, just being absorbed in the story without thinking about it, was therapeutic.
When I plan my travel schedule, I look at guidebooks, but I also just check places of interest on Google Maps.
I found a place called ‘Stockholm Royal Opera House’ and decided I wanted to see music in a place like this, so I booked a ticket.
We didn’t really understand the content in Swedish, but we enjoyed it, imagining what it was expressing. We watched a piece called ‘the promise’.
It’s been a very good experience.

Tickets are available here.

The opera finished at around 10pm, so I took the bus back to the hotel that day and fell asleep immediately .
3日目Day 3.
I found a 7-Eleven .

When you walk around Stockholm, you will find 7-Eleven stores everywhere.
I looked in thinking they may sell Japanese food, but the products inside were different.

Of Stockholm’s 14 islands, large and small, this one is probably the most visited.
After an hour’s walk from the hotel to Gamla Stan, we went to a café for a rest.

The café we happened to arrive at was a small place right in front of Stortorget Square …

The atmosphere in the shop was relaxed, and we ate bread and baked goods.
With stomachs full, sightseeing begins!
Nobel Prize Museum

The Nobel Museum has a café inside, where you can get an ice-cream, which Nobel Laureates eat after the award ceremony.

The pink ice cream on top had a tart raspberry flavour and the ice cream underneath was sweet and delicious!
At the museum, you can see exhibits about Nobel and learn about the Nobel Prize winners.
What surprised me the most was that there were ‘Senbazuru’ (a thousand folded paper cranes) on display.
I was somewhat pleased to see that the thoughts of the people of Hiroshima had reached the world.
I haven’t done anything about it, though …

This is the souvenir corner .
I bought Nobel chocolates for my colleagues. And a Schrödinger and Einstein postcard for myself.

KIKI’s delivery service tour
This time, we wanted to take it easy, so we decided to take a walk around Gamla Stan, rather than overcrowding our schedule.
I realised during the planning process that this was the place where KIKI’s Delivery Service was set, and I really enjoyed seeing the places from the film!

Where Kiki and Gigi were depressed together.

I also saw a girl character called PIPPI here and there in souvenir shops.
Research revealed that the character is from a Stockholm novel!
I was surprised to see both an animation and a live-action version.

Swedish Cuisine
When I look up traditional Swedish food, meatballs are the first thing to hit. It’s impossible not to eat them.

In Japan, meatballs are small pieces of meat that you would put in a lunch box. The meatballs are small pieces of meat that you can put in your lunch box.
These were real meatballs, no longer hamburgers. Big and juicy.
The sauce was delicious.
The dish on the right is ‘Jansson’s temptation’, another traditional Swedish dish.
I like the name .What kind of food? You are curious and order it …
This home-cooked dish consists of alternating layers of potatoes and anchovies, topped with a dollop of cream and baked in the oven.
It tasted like gratin without the macaroni . (I hope you get the idea…).
Crackers came as a set on the side and were served together.

Here’s another one . I had salmon. I saw the person at the next table eating it, and I wanted to eat it.
Day 4

Breakfast on the fourth day was soup and open-sandwiches at a café.
I saw open-sandwiches with lots of prawns on them at the café I visited on the second day, so I thought they might be famous, so I asked for one.
The bread was delicious and different from ordinary bread.
Vasamuseet

On the fourth day we went to see the Vasa.
The Vasa was a ship that set sail from Stockholm in 1682 and sank.
333 years later, the ship was raised from the seabed and is on display in the Vasa Museum.
References ↓↓

The moment you enter the museum, you are overwhelmed by the huge ship.
The ship can be observed from various directions, up and down, left and right, so it was a great sight to behold.
We were able to walk around and read about what happened to the ship and the process of the exhibition.
We spent a leisurely two hours there.

Then back to the shopping mall.
I became completely hooked on semla and went in search of it in all kinds of shops.
Just as curry bread varies from bakery to bakery, semla varies from shop to shop.
Every year around this time, the best semla is announced.
Incidentally, the best semla in 2024 was won by a shop called ‘Pesso’.
If I lived in Sweden, I would eat semla from all the shops…

I went to the shopping mall not only to look for semla, but also to buy some dinner. As the hotel has a kitchen, I wanted to enjoy looking in the local supermarket.

Day 5

Stockholms stadsbibliotek

The library, built by modern architecture master Erik Gunnar Asplund, is a 360° space surrounded by books, a magical place that is at once surreal and relaxing.

Walking round and round, I found a book in Japanese! For a while, I sat down on a chair and immersed myself in the book.
I read Haruki Murakami’s ‘Nemuri’ and Kaori Ekuni’s ‘It is neither safe nor appropriate to swim’.
I like the women in both novels sooo much.
Japanese food
There was a Japanese restaurant near the library that looked good, so I went there.

I love matcha, so whenever I find a shop that sells it, I make sure to stock up.
In Japan, I can drink it anywhere.

The next stop is Stockholm, from where you can get a panoramic view of the city.
I wanted to catch the sunset just as it was setting, so we waited until then to watch the football game at a nearby sports bar that happened to be passing by.
That match was a big party and a lot of fun.

It is commonplace here to relax in a sports bar, and children and pets were seen here and there in the restaurant, making it a cosy place.
The most spectacular spot

The picture doesn’t do it justice… The view over Stockholm…
This is the place that every guidebook recommends when you visit Stockholm.
It was so beautiful I wanted to stay there forever … But … I had a cold limit and decided to go home after a while.
I was a bit peckish, so I stopped at McDonald’s for some take-away.
The menu was a little different from that in Japan. I ordered chicken and apple pie .

It was tastier than Japanese apple pie, with more cinnamon .

Day 6

On the last day, we went to Gamla Stan once more.
I was walking along and happened to see them marching .

Kungliga slotte

Stockholm Palace was built as a fortress by Birjel Jarl in the 13th century and was extended and renovated into a Renaissance-style palace in the 16th century under Johan III.
In 1960 it was decided to rebuild the palace in the Baroque style and it was completed in 1697, but in May of that year a fire destroyed most of the palace.
It was later rebuilt and is still in use today as the office of the Swedish king, Carl Gustaf XVI, among others.
The palace has 609 rooms and is one of the largest palaces still in use in the world.

The best semla I’ve ever had was in this shop. The cinnamon and the bread is just the right consistency.

Conclusion
Sweden was very peaceful and a very nice place.
Now I want to come back in summer to eat crayfish .
